Peñasco Least Chipmunk (Tamias minimus atristriatus) is a small (11 cm long, not including tail) subspecies of least chipmunk that occurs in New Mexico on Sierra Blanca and Lookout Mountain in the White Mountains, but appears to have been extirpated from the Sacramento Mountains. They are typically associated with open grassy habitats interspersed with large cover structures, including rocks, downed logs, stumps, low shrubs, or dense herbaceous ground cover. These habitats include subalpine Thurber’s fescue meadows, or open ponderosa pine savanna and adjacent valley meadows.
