Eared Grebe (Podiceps nigricollis) is a small (30-35 cm) waterbird with bright red eyes and a golden fan of feathers sweeping back across their black head (breeding adult). They are distributed west of the Mississippi River from Mexico to southern Canada. They inhabit marshes, ponds, and lakes, and are an uncommon summer resident of shallow, vegetated lakes in northern New Mexico. They feed on aquatic and terrestrial insects and their larvae.
