Gila Woodpecker (Melanerpes uropygialis) is a large (24 cm) woodpecker found in southern California and Arizona, the southwest corner of New Mexico, and south through Baja California and the central mainland of Mexico. They are cavity nesters in large trees and cacti (especially saguaro) in deserts and open forests in New Mexico.
