Lewis's Woodpecker (Melanerpes lewis) is a large (26-28 cm) woodpecker. They are distributed across the western U.S. and southern British Columbia. They inhabit open forest and woodland with elements of brushy understory and woody debris. Unlike many woodpeckers, they rarely bore into trees searching for insects, but instead pick them from the surface of the bark or catch them in the air.
